Subject: Time control question

I notice that on WinBoard, when you reach the required number of moves for the
time control, it adds the amount of time for the next time control onto the
amount of time left over from the previous time control.

Is this the correct way to do it? I had always assumed that something like "40
moves in 40 minutes" meant that each set of 40 moves had to be made in 40
minutes. But WinBoard makes it look like the time control is 40 moves within 40
minutes, then get to move 80 within 80 minutes, etc.

I've never played real tournament games, though, so I would appreciate it if
someone who knew could tell me the correct interpretation of a time control.

Thanks,
Rob
