I like to use the Bratko-Kopec (sp?) positions. They are old, but everybody has
them, and they seem to be as good as any other positions for testing speed and
search efficiency.

As for accuracy of the search, there is a well known test suite named Win At
Chess. It has 300 positions. If you score over 250, you can be fairly sure that
your search isn't missing anything serious.
