I presume this is because they believe that upgrading it could in effect be
considered as a different program. Sure, this would depend on the amount of
changes, but I doubt they want to go to the trouble of controlling this sort of
thing. What about openings though? The program is already commercially
available, allowing the opponents unparalleled preparation possibilities. If the
openings book remains the same, then opponents could easily 'cook' the games.
This would effectively destroy the point and value of this event for computer
chess.
