I very seldom play timed games against any program. This is due to my unusual
lifestyle -- although I work at home, my games are liable to be interrupted at
any moment by the family or by the phone. It's true that most programs (Fritz
included) have an option that allows you to pause the clocks temporarily, but
(to me) this just defeats the whole purpose. It's not a big issue with me anyway
-- I no longer play rated OTB chess, so it's not like I need to be terribly
cognizant of the clock.

I do play timed gamed on-line, in which case I lock the office door. When my
wife yells through the door to ask what I'm doing, I tell her I'm looking at
porn pics -- for some reason this upsets her less than telling her that I'm
playing chess (again). ;-)

The forthcoming Fritz6 patch will allow you to play timed games in Friend mode,
btw.
