Both processors have their strong points. It's mainly a question of >the program's memory characteristic, because the integer units of the processors >seem to be exactly as fast as e/o. I went back to the store today and loaded Rebel Decade 2.0 and ran a quick speed test. A problem that takes 7:04 on my AMD 233 took 3:33 on the P3-800, both in dos mode. So for this test twice as fast, not exactly what I expected. Other programs will no doubt test out differently. The salesman talked about the onboard L2 cache for the P3 but said that Athlon is eventually going that route also with a 512 cache size. Being a long time user of AMD chips I most likely will wait awhile to see how the newer Athlons will perform.
