Maybe that is Chessmate described at: http://groundzerosw.com/ChessMate/

Here is what they write:

What exactly is ChessMate™?
ChessMate™1.0 is a graphical interface designed to coordinate chess games over a
modem-to-modem connection between two computers. ChessMate™ is unique in that it
is a 'cross-platform' program, allowing communication and game play between a PC
and a Mac linked via modem. While distance might separate you and your opponent,
operating systems shouldn't. Of course, ChessMate™ also supports games between
two PCs or two Macs. ChessMate™ exists in two forms: a PC executable file, and a
Macintosh HyperCard stack. Once connected via modem (all done with the click of
a button), each version of ChessMate™ will communicate seamlessly with its
cross-platform counterpart. During game play, the interface is strictly
graphical; that is, when you move a piece on your board, the same piece moves
automatically on your opponent's, and vice versa. ChessMate™ also supports a
'chat' feature with which you and your friend/opponent can send each other
messages. The purpose of ChessMate™ is to simulate the feel of sitting down to a
game of chess with a friend...even though your friend might live in another
city!
