In the winter, the room where we have our computer gets pretty cool, so I leave it on, not wanting it to cool down so much (which would induce thermal stress). In the warmer weather, I turn it off at night (and leave it off during the days when I go to work). I do turn off the monitor at night (although my monitor goes into standby mode, anyway, after a period of non-input, and the screen goes dark since I don't have screensavers running). To date I have never had a hard drive failure, although on our former 486 computer I did have two cpu fan failures.
