Sounds like you just tried it on a busy time, generally it works fine on
both ICC and FICS, I have been testing it for many weeks and played thousands
of games whithout problems.
But I have seen FICS beeing slow at times. Don't remember about ICC.

Make sure your timeseal/timestamp settings are correct.
