It should be a rare occurance when a program is used without its opening book.
After all, the book is part of the program. And the program is no doubt designed
with this in mind.

However, it is advantageous for a program to play reasonably with no book.
Humans (and some programs) are annoyingly clever at getting programs out of book
early...
