First of all, DB does not use NULL move. So a ten ply search has examined many
times as many nodes than a ten ply search that does use NULL move. Then, at
some point in the process, DB begins to examine favorable possibilities. The
actual depth in plies along these lines can be many times longer than the
"sphere of perfect knowledge" and hence the plies do not relate to the plies of
any other program that I know. Junior also uses a very different terminology
for plies. I think it would be good if we could come up with an accurate
description of different types of ply. Right now, there is none that is
technically accurate and widely used. Hence if Joe says "My program searched 9
plies" and Fred says, "My program searched 8 plies" we don't really have a very
good idea how these relate.
