It is certainly possible that (a) in DB2 they used some form of null-move or (b) they used something else entirely (they obviously had enough horsepower to do all kinds of short searches to make pruning decisions) or (c) they did what Hsu always claimed, just a very fast full-width search with lots of extensions... Hard to say, so far...
