Unless the competition has a specific rule regarding opening books (and I cannot recall to mind any major championship that does) I believe that it is up to the programmers to determine how they want to approach the opening book question. In my experience the majority of chess programs I have show on occasion that they can play several lines from their book and come out of book with a negative evaluation for themsleves. This doesn't happen all the time, but more often than I would expect if the book is tuned to the playing style of the program. I am sure there will be many other knowledgable experts that can expand my views. Keith
