For me, I only like freeware programs that come with source code. That's because I like to trace the code and see the clever solutions that the authors used to solve chess problems. I don't care much about LG2000 because I can't process EPD with it and I don't have source code for it. I have downloaded it, but aside from a few matches just for fun, I never use it. Crafty is my favorite chess program. But that does not mean I don't like the others. Phalanx is wonderfully done also. Some of the simpler ones like TSCP, ColChess, and ExChess are lots of fun too. What are the goals of the person who wants to use the program? To see someone else's ideas at work is one thing that I like to do. They are not useless to me. I think it is great fun to examine them all. Even the ones without source code, if they are winboard compatible, I will usually download the new version and try a game or two at 40/2 just to see how it plays.
