A ply is measured in different ways by different programs/programmers.
Basically speaking a ply is a half-move. In other words, on move number 1,
white moves then black moves. Whites choice is a ply and black's choice is a
ply. Together the two plies make the first move of the game.

The more plies searched, the better the program plays (barring programming
errors and bad probability outcomes -- in the long run it plays better).
