	All the competive chess engines I know of (and most non-competive ones) choose
their moves by searching a tree of variations and evaluating the leaf positions.
The depth of the tree is measured in plies (be careful because a n-ply search in
program X means something different as a n-ply search in program Y).
	For the SAME engine, deeper searches (i.e. higher plies reached) usually means
stronger play.
