Subject: Marshall Mistake - Reply to Blass Uri

Author: Steve Coladonato

Date: 09:06:43 02/05/00

I have included the PGN for a Marshall game with the Sapphire II. The game
includes analysis from Fritz 5.32 and my comments on some of moves and
evaluations. The Sapphire continues to play this line up through move 16 where
it starts to deviate. It's learning mode is trying to help it but I think it
isn't deviating early enough.

In the original post, I stated that both the Sapphire and Fritz had fallen
victim to the Marshall. However, when I took a look at the Fritz game, I wasn't
sure what level it was playing at; it may have been sparring. So rather than
open a can of worms, I have not included it. The Sapphire II game is pretty
much repeatable so I have included it.

Blass, I don't know if this is exactly what you were looking for but here it is.

I'm not sure why the Sapphire II plays this move.  13. Re1 seems to be better.}
13... Qh4 14. g3 Qh5 15. Bxd5 {last book move. I believe this is where the
Sapphire II goes wrong. This move creates a true pin on the e2 Rook and
doesn't relieve any of the pressure on the King side. Shredder likes Re4 with
the same threshold.} 15... cxd5 16. Qe1 Bg4 17. Re3 f5 18. f3 18... f4 $16 {
