Subject: The ROUND 5

This post will hopefully clear up some opinions about what actually happened in
round 5.

#1 McRiley will no longer be able to run the tournament for the foreseeable
future. He will also not have internet access as far as I know. As such, I have
taken over as TD for the CCT for rounds 5/6. I intend to continue as TD for
rounds 7/8 if there are no violent objections. I have also acquired the pairing
software used by USCF. I will also run the GnuChess account from my 450mhz to
keep the pairings even.

#2 Because I was unaware of McRiley's plight, I was only able to take over there
and then. I apologize for this on behalf of ICC. Since it has alot to do with
the delay and the mix up as discussed below (#3).

#3 When I logged in I quickly learned about the situation concerning crafty(C)
and ban(C). All of this happened after I arrived unfortunately.

a) Crafty has been censoring ban for while now based on some personal dispute
that is of no relevance to the tourney.

Hyatt tells you: at 11:45 crafty was playing diepx... I was involved in
stopping that, and discovered the censor...

Hyatt tells you: someone reported at 11:50 that "crafty is censoring ban, so
he said he is not playing and left".

Hyatt tells you: I immediately responded "I just fixed that problem.."

You get an idea of what happened just from the above. Also note that since Hyatt
himself had a censor in his personal account, he missed any tells from ban both
in person and to the channel.

I later spoke with Amir regarding the whole situation.

It is important to note that Amir chose to leave, he was _not_ kicked out of the
tourney as I have seen some people say.

He told me that in a conversation with Bruce (ferret) that he wanted one of 2
things. #1 Bob to apologize on CCC or #2 That he forfeit and Crafty would get a
technical win.

#2 Would have happened. However, the general feeling was that it would be unfair
to let the leader (crafty) get a full point for nothing. So a re-pairing was
done for round 5.

Note that Amir never said he was quiting the entire tourney explicitly, he felt
insulted by even having to bring up the fact that his opponent was censoring him
and so chose to leave.

Here, I must point out that he tried to contact McRiley who was the TD to
explain the situation. Since McRiley was not logged in, it was obviously very
frustrating. I must again apologize on behalf of ICC for a TD not being present.
It should be clear that Amir should not be expected to sort out problems with
censors and formulas etc. It is up to the TD to notify all parties involved.

Amir has since agreed to continue with the tourney, which I think is wonderful.
Also, as I mentioned before, GnuChess is back too.

I hope this has cleared up some things, and I look forward to last few rounds.
I do hope that we can have more of these tourneys. Best of luck to all.

thanks for your time,

Steve Lim
