1. Crafty had a tremendous undefeated tournament (great job, Bob!), only two draws, coming in clear 1st Place ahead of 3 strong commercial programs. Congratulations! Many would have thought that nearly impossible. Others had some basis for hope based on earlier testing results at 40/2 and longer versus commercial programs. 2. Significant recognition is also due to Shredder 3, whose undefeated score came in clear 2nd Place! And that isn't even the latest Shredder of world championship vintage. Congratulations also. 3. Note that this tournament marks a great collaboration among many, many enthusiastic amateur and commercial programmers. Thanks goes to Junior and Nimzo (as with Shredder 3) for putting their commercial reputations on the line, up against the amateurs. That shows real courage and sportsmanship! 4. And finally--it was a real treat for me and many other spectators to watch these highly competitive games. You showed it could be done, albeit with some substantial effort including preparations. I hope it is held again, without the rough spots (should be with a lot less friction), and that those who sat out this initial event will join in next time (Rebel, etc). 5. SUGGESTION FOR NEXT TIME--Maybe a small charter statement could be adopted for the next event (and be used during the promotional leadup)--expressing the mutual goals of both organizers and entrants: A. to conduct a high quality tournament in exemplary competitive fashion, B. to foster good will and good sportsmanship among many highly talented amateur and commercial programmers, C. to demonstrate their chess programming skills via the play of their programs, and C. to put on a great public show for chess enthusiasts (don't forget us! :) ). Perhaps signing up to such a small commitment would help (as a reminder) to promote courtesy and civility among all participants, win lose or draw. I certainly shall hope for this. Then we can settle back and watch the competition unfold. Thanks.
