Go up one level in this thread

Thanks for pointing that out, Bruce. I believe links to my responses to Michael
Cummings' questions and hgkjhg's question may have got lost together with the
separation bar. Maybe it's okay to post some again then for the sake of
completeness.

Regarding my response to hgkjhg :
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To hgkjhg I believe I said that though the moderator job did not seem very
appealing to me I be felt that somebody had to do it.

My response to Michael:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Michael! Thanks for your questions! I will try to answer them as best as I
can but I think it is not always possible to give a clear yes or no answer. In
each case you hope to have some more background-information about the
circumstances or the posters and that may play a role. Also as moderators we
would have to agree on some sort of common policy so that would influence things
too. That being said I hope to say something more specific but the general
principle would be that if a poster seems to only want to post unconstructive
messages these would get deleted. The poster would get warned by E-mail in which
we would attempt to explain why messages were deleted. If the poster persists
doing this he would get banned if all moderators would agree on that.

1.
Will you be less tolerant when a new member posts off topic troll related
threads when they first join and continue to post off topic for most of their
posts there-after. Will you ban this new member easier than if a long time
established memeber started doing this.

The answer would be yes unless we as moderators would agree that we couldn't
find many constructive posts by this established member in the first place. But
if this member suddenly seemed to change the nature of his posting I would hope
we could find out why he or she was doing that and try to do something more
helpful to this member.

2.
If a new members post something which starts a fight, which is not computer
chess related and ends up blown into a huge CCC rumble, eg the (bella sexist
threads) what will you do or say to this new member.

For me the Bella threads were not a very good example because I was sure she was
not really a new member and I understand there was whole story of e-mail
exchanges moderated by a third party between the programmers preceding it. This
story is complicated and I don't know much of the background either. Of course
some of those posts were very offensive and many were rightly deleted too. But I
hope that you will agree with me that there were also some more constructive
exchanges from both sides.

3.
If a member is a computer chess related thread say to another member, that their
testing methods are wrong and that there results will have little point or
value, do you regard this as a insult to a fellow member.

That would depend also on the way he would phrase and if he could come up with
arguments to substantiate his view. But if you are referring to Thorsten's post
I would like to believe that Thorsten stands behind his own ideas and has done
so for a long time. I don't see that he was really trying to insult other
testers, he was just expressing his views. I can also understand that this may
be exasperating to those testers because they see just the same discussion over
and over again and it may seem to be just directed against them personally. I
don't think that was Thorsten's intent. I didn't see the post that got deleted
so I can't say much about that.

3a.
If one moderater finds that the post is fine and another does not, what will you
do if that person complains to you because you are a moderator that thinks this
is a valid opinion and wants there post bought back. Will you support his
efforts. (note - do not answer that you think the testing method post was wrong
and you do not support it, just answer that you are a moderator that would
support it and what you would do)

If a post was to be put back all moderators would have to agree on that after
having discussed it. If one moderator decided a post was to be deleted I don't
think it would be very likely that it was actually a flawless post so I think it
could happen only if a post got totally misinterpreted.

4.
Someone posts a saying or quote which to you is acceptable but you admitt is
strong, and you get moderator emails saying that that it is very offensive,
maybe due to culture or religion.

If I could see that the post in question could be taken as offensive to part of
the membership I would delete it and ask the original poster to express his
views again if possible in a more civilized manner.

5.
Will you be a moderator who will have less tolerance for new members who have
strange names, eg (ChessGod) and has a free hotmail or email account, and posts
chess releated trolling rubbish. Will you ban these account, knowing that we do
have Sean and other trouble making people constantly creating new accounts.

I think such a name would not be acceptable especially with so many names to
choose from. If the other moderators would agree, it would be banned. Repeated
trolling posts would be eventually also reason to get banned.

6.
A member complains that he has been reciving emails from another member who is
sending him "how to make a million dollars" and "join this sex site and get a
free video", and that this member is using other members emails to use for their
spam emails.

It may be difficult to find out. Only if there would be some sort of proof you
could think about taking more direct action against members.
