It is nothing but problems. Right now, only a small fraction are interested
enough even to voice their opinions for choice of moderator -- a very important
decision. So a small minority is choosing the way the forum will perform in the
near future. In this case, I think there is no harm at all, since all of the
candidates were excellent. But now, let's extrapolate...

In the future, someone decides poster fooble should be banned.

"Let's put it to a vote!" shouts poster boofle.

A small, vocal minority vote to ban/not-ban fooble [works out the same either
way]. Now, we have a decision formed. But those who did not bother to make a
choice were the vast majority and are very disturbed by the outcome. Do you
imagine that there will not be a mess one hundred times larger than we are even
capable of generating right now?

There is simply no way that this notion could be made to function. I don't
think that what we have right now is all that great, but I have not heard any
*workable* alternatives to date. I think anything that would work better would
be a good idea.
