A number of people have encountered problems downloading .cbv files (ChessBase archive format). I have traced it to Netscape -- no Internet Explorer user has difficulties, some Netscape users do and some strangely don't. Apparently Netscape thinks .cbv is something special and does something to it. This does not appear to be documented, but if you go to: www.computerschach.de/tourn/cad00.htm and try downloading the games in CBV by clicking (or shift-clicking) the last line you get 163,744 Bytes instead of the original 163,142 Bytes, and if you try to start the file with ChessBase or Fritz you get a "Not enough disk space" error from Windows. You can check it out with a smaller file if you want: http://www.computerschach.de/nunn2.cbv My questions: 1. Why is Netscape doing this? (What did we ever do to Netscape?) 2. How can the problem be solved or circumvented. I know I can post zip files, but CBV is already highly compressed and it is foolish to ask the whole world to first PKunzip and then CBunzip before running the files. 3. What is with CBV? I'm open to any conspiracy theory, especially if it involves the Pentagon.
