The main claim to fame for the athlon was pin-compatibility with the 21264 chip from digital (the athlon is much cheaper). Unfortunately the EV6 stuff is way expensive (and doesn't use traditional PC memory at all). So while the athlon chip might be cheap, a SMP version will likely cost a small fortune.
