Tinker currently has no book, but I have noticed its tendency to play Petrov lines (eco C42/C43?) as black, which it lost 3 times (as did its opponents also playing that line--Stormx and Gnuchess). Thanks to whichever opponent pointed this out! Without a book and not wanting to hard code anything, I adjusted the time allocated for the first few moves to try to avoid this. I was not very sucessful. I had artificially set fast move times for the first few moves so human opponents would not get frustrated waiting 30 sec or more for e4 and forgot to change them for the tournament. Naturally, I would welcome suggestions on implementing a book. I would like to do it in a way that also integrates learning, but not to simply mimic Crafty's approach. Of course, Tinker may well have lost many of these games anyway. Even more annoying was a wrong eval factor for blocked center pawns of -.85 !! This led to the rather unfortunate line against Galahadx: Move GalahadX Tinker ---- ---------------- ---------------- 1. c4 (0:01) e5 (0:08) 2. Nc3 (3:11) Nf6 (0:00) 3. Nf3 (4:44) e4 (2:19) 4. Ng5 (2:42) e3 (0:00) !? although Tinker was able to eek out a draw... Many other things were learned and tested in the tournament (including gross misuse of ponder time). I would very much like to have another one.
