Not exactly. I'm using two color bits. One for white and one for black. So if,
for example, I want to know if there is a white piece on a certain square all I
need to do is 'if (board[i] & WHITE)'. No need to check for an empty square.

00010001 white pawn
00100001 black pawn
etc...
