Perhaps, but I've seen a report that indicates that UI is rated as one of the
top reasons for buying a program.  Of course it wasn't done with chess programs
but I can't imagine chess program buyers are that much different from other
people.

Writing just the interface would be a very boring job for me.  And I doubt I'll
ever make another chess program (I wrote one for C64 for fun years ago).

See my other reply for examples but there are many other things I could add to
that if I looked a bit longer into that.
