Subject: Screamer 1.0 b47 for Macintosh - web site overloaded - alternate site.

The rush to download Screamer (over 1300 downloads in 3 days from one link
alone) overran the limit the ISP set on the web page, so it is down until March
(or unless the account is upgraded, one imagines.).

Here's a download link for Screamer that will work in the interim:

ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/rec/screamer-chess-10.hqx

Screamer is a free, master strength, ExaChess compatible chess program for Macs.
Screamer doesn't have nearly the lengthy feature list of
Sigma Chess or MacChess, but if you want a feature it doesn't have,
it is quite possible that ExaChess does, and by using it as an ExaChess
plugin engine, it will.

Screamer 1.0 can be run standalone or as a chess engine under ExaChess Lite
to perform analysis or play against other ExaChess compatible engines.
Exachess Lite is freeware, at http://www.exachess.com

Major features of Screamer 1.0:

* Outscored Crafty 14.11 in a 124 game match under ExaChess (62.5-61.5)[See
Note]
* Includes documentation file with screenshots
* Unlimited move takeback
* Two piece sets
* Move by Point & Click or Click & Drag
* Handicap computer by search time or search depth
* Copy/Paste positions in standard Extended Position Description (EPD) text
format
* Analyze files of EPD positions in batch mode with logging

Requires Power Macintosh, 5.0Mb free RAM, and System 8.5 or higher.

[Note}: Crafty had no tablebases, a small book, wasn't told it was playing
        a computer, and pondering was off. (Same true of Screamer)
        Time was 10 sec/move. Current version of Crafty on Mac is something
        like 15.4.
