I don't have any great sophistication in using Chess Base or Fritz. When I'm
reviewing my games, I just use the General ctg. book with its default settings.
I force the program to follow the book moves that occurred in my games, and then
usually put in a text note when I'm finally out of this book. If I feel really
bold, I'll consult Nunn's Chess Opening or some specialist opening book on the
side to get a better insight into what went on this game.
(other books, if I ever make it that far:).

I have bought a few engines over time, (Fritz6, Junior5, and Hiarcs7.32 among
them), and I'll reach a critical position in the game, where I or my opponent
has 'screwed it up', and play that position agianst the engines, until I can
write a note that reflects what appears to have happened, partly based on my
memory of my thoughts during the game. Its a lot of self-reflection, but its
what all the great chessplayers, teacher/writers insist has to be done to
attempt improvement. I hope their right, but despite the fact that I work at
the finist chess club in the world, and take this stuff seriously, my rating
(and probably chess strenght), has been on a plattew for many years. But I
still dream of significant progress, and guess I always will - so another reason
I try every Friday (when I can play & direct), in the rapids!
