If you don't want a book that large, you could create your own opening book with
a pgn file of some GM games (but the one available for download is better than
any books that I've made) but you still want to download the books.bin and
bookc.bin files.

Here's Crafty's outline of creating a book:

>>>>>>>>
EPD Kit revision date: 1996.04.21
found computer opening book file [./bookc.bin].
4 piece tablebase files found
1385kb of RAM used for TB indices and decompression tables
hash table memory = 6M bytes.
pawn hash table memory = 1M bytes.

Crafty v17.8

White(1): book create
usage: book|books create filename maxply [minplay] [win/lose ]
White(1):
<<<<<<<<

So you could get by with something like:

book create games.pgn 50

and that would make a book from the file "games.pgn" and it would be able to
follow that book for 25 moves (50 plys). See the Crafty.doc file for a better
more complete explanation.

But if you have the space for the 12mb book at the Crafty ftp site, that takes a
little bit of download time, but it's a good book.
