I can think of two explanations for Silman's conclusions. 1. He wrote this a couple of years ago, after testing on what today would be considered very slow hardware. Genius appears to have been relatively stronger on the slow hardware of a few years ago, not getting quite as much benefit from today's fast computers. Also other programs have had one or two updates since then but Genius hasn't. So perhaps Silman was correct at the time, but things have changed since. 2. Silman was commenting on his impressions as an IM trying to beat these monsters, and the impressions of other strong players trying to do likewise. On that scale, the Genius series has always been very tough, and is probably still quite close to the best programs. In program vs program, Genius has certainly been overtaken now, and was never completely dominant.
