Tom, read my lips carefully. AMD is _not_ considered a serious competitor for
Intel chips. Look at the volume. Look at the demand. Like it or not, the
world has settled on Intel, just like it settled on IBM in the 1960's when
Univac fiddled away the lion's share of the mainframe market. I just passed
thru comp-USA this week buying some disk drives. I found 2 AMD-based machines
(one notebook, one short tower) out of several dozen on display.

I don't claim that AMD is 'bad'. But they definitely aren't in demand anywhere
near comparable to Intel. And they have had way too many problems, as the
horror stories have shown.

Then why the demand for Intel if "everybody knows...". supply and demand
economics usually show what everyone considers to be superior. Based on that,
it is Intel by a landslide. No I don't like any part of the Intel architecture.
Motorola was 100 times better from an assembly programming point of view. But
they _have_ dominated the market like no other, and continue to do so.

yes, but only 1 of every 50 machines sold has an athlon in it. Just because
they are offered for sale, doesn't mean they are sold very often.

that would be a change. Good or bad would be hard to say.
