As far as I could tell, and I was on the phone with Adams five times, there was
no interest in doing anything other than playing. The f-word ("forfeit") was
only mentioned during the last of these calls, and remember that we had even
called Postovsky in Russia during this time! When I was first called things had
already broken down, so I think it took considerably more time. The "final
deadline" we were trying to meet, and I was on the phone with Shay at the time,
was 18:00 Bermuda time, or five hours after his day started. Carol, being an
experienced international arbiter, strictly noted the time of the cut and of
every phone call.

Nobody was driving this, there was no manipulation while this was happening.
Adams was sitting there ready to play for over an hour and NEVER said anything
other than "when can they start? Are they on yet?" I still have the message on
my cell phone from Carol in Bermuda, coming at 18:30 her time to say that they
couldn't believe we hadn't called them for half an hour and were leaving.

I firmly believe that if Junior had gotten back online half an hour earlier than
it did that the second game would have taken place. Anyone crediting Adams for
wanting to do anything other than play chess that day doesn't know him or his
reputation.
