Go up one level in this thread
Consider the following facts:
1] Kasparov is about 200 points stronger than Deep Junior.
2] Based on #1, GK should expect to score about 75% against DJ.
3] GK's last very public experience with a computer IBM's D Blue was by
far the worst experience of his career. He went from a noble champion to a sore
loser who went on making claims of cheating on the part of IBM. This proves
that the IBM experience was emotional and bitter.
4] If GK is statistically unlucky, and loses to DJ, this will be a
major computer chess event, with all kinds of requests for interviews to discuss
his loss. The odds of this happening are not remote. I have a chance to beat a
player 200 points better than me in a two game match and vice versa.
Moreover, the performance of DJ against strong grandmasters clearly indicates
that it has the potential to draw blood against GK.
5] Do you really think that Adams would have been declaired the winner
over DJ without a "clear" from GK?
CONCLUSION:
Kasparov has reason to fear DJ and does fear DJ (especially in a two
game/hour match).
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED:
1] There were real technical problems in communication the moves
between Adams and DJ.
2] The lack of rules and the circumstances of the match allowed the
organizers to GO EITHER WAY in deciding what to do (delare Adams the winner or
continue the next day). Adams did not want to play against DJ and Kasparov did
not want to play against DJ.
3] The organizers saw an the opportunity to take advatage of the
unclear situation and chose to pleae Garry which is a smart move from their
point.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT KASPAROV WOULD RATHER HAVE HIS TEAM TO TAKE THE
MINOR HEAT FOR DECLARING ADAMS THE WINNER, THAN TAKE THE CHANCE THAT THIS GM
KILLING PROGRAM WOULD BEAT HIM IN A TWO GAME MATCH!
