I know you said "free" but I have to say, having looked at what's out there to purchase, Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess is superb and can be purchased here at Your Move for a fairly low price (I forget what I paid). It worked well for my 7 year old but clearly had some depth to it he couldn't use yet. I thing it would be an excellent learning tool for ages 7 to 14. I found Chess Mates to be a problem running on my computer for some reason. David
