Subject: Multiprocessing question

Can someone explain in lamons terms how you get 3x  the speed on a quad
over a single cpu? I just don't understand how for example crafty can utilize
the 4 cpu's to be 3.5 (or whatever) faster? How does the program actually
speed up is  ( I guess ) the queston? .
