I was rumaging through an old used book store here in Tacoma, WA over my mid-winter break from school and I managed to find a great old book on computer chess. It is an old book from 1983 called "Chess Skill in Man and Machine" and it has 10 great articles from all sorts of different authors as well 3 appendixes with dozens of games. Some of the most interesting ones have been "Chess 4.5-The Northwestern University chess porgram" by David Slate and Lawrence Atkin, "Plans, goals, and search strategies for the selction of a move in chess" by Russel and Kenneth Church, "The heuristic search: An alternative to the alpha-beta minimax procedure" by Larry Harris, "Using chess knowledge to reduce search" by David Wilkins, and "Belle" by JH Condon and Ken Thompson. I must say that the area of computer chess seems so boring compared to the way it must have been in the 70's. Another interesting thing was seeing Bob Hyatt's early program 'Blitz' battle Ken Thompson's program 'Belle' way back in 1978. If anyone here has a chance to pick this book up, I highly reccommend it. It is well over 300 pages of great meaty content, and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Jeff
