No, I do not think you are missing anything.

My program does not yet play chess, but my partner and I spent about 100 hours
each on it so far. But that included research, design spec, and incorporating
about 70% of the overall functionality in the first cut.

If you want a good program, you need to put in the time (which I do not have
much of).

If you want a working program (but not necessarily good), you could probably get
one working in a weekend.
