Would he ever prefer a freeware program if he could download it?) Kasparov (and indeed 90% of computer chess users) will not prefer a freeware program over a commercial one. You have to be far more computer literate to use freeware programs, and then the features available from freeware programs is a microscopic subset of commercial programs. Strength is another matter. I would look at Will's "Standard" list, and also look at the rankings of Winboard programs here: http://www.ginko.de/user/volker.pittlik/schach/winboard.htm If you have the time and machines to include them, it would be a good idea.
