Use only the "Black" pieces in the font and set their color buy changing the font color instead. You then control the square color by changing the background color. The problem is generating good contrast between the White pieces and the light color squares, since the white units are rendered without any black outline. They also just look "too plain". I experimented with this using TCL/TK. I got it to work, but I decided I _much_ preferred the more straight forward way of using chess fonts. They look great to me even if the squares _are_ "colorless". BTW, my favorite chess font is Chess Alpha.
