Deep Blue was a great accomplishment. Deep Blue was also a multiprocessor
system. It is possible to put 1000 (or more) Intel processors together
in a multiprocessor configuration and get (in my opinion) close to or more
computing power than Deep Blue had. So, in my humble opinion, you could
construct a system using Intel chips and get a comparable Deep Blue or
faster system.

The cost would be high. :) If computing continues to double every 18
months, then in six years, we would only need 64 chips and in 9 years,
only 16 chips, in 12 years only 4 chips. I think other factors such as
memory speed, bus speed, and program improvements will get us to a single
chip having the highest rating in tournament play against humans in less
than 10 years (perhaps the 10th aniversary of the first Deep Blue vs
Kasparov match, 7 years in 2006). :)

I am basing this on a starting point of Intel 500 MHZ and we are not far
from 1GHZ now, thus the first 1.5 year doubling cycle is almost over. :)

Just my opinion. :)

Chris Carson
