This is very interesting to me.
I think perhaps the word ("against") was left out, which leaves
this kind of funny.
I've been following correspondence match of S. Ham against Nimzo and
Fritz at http://correspondencechess.com/campbell/index.htm.
The differences are substantial because in the game played the human
lost very quickly to the computer.
In these four games (ongoing), I feel that two are unclear, in one human has
a slight advantage, and in one human has an advantage more than slight but
less than large.
Perhaps this is just what might happen in a small sample size.
Otherwise I would have to think that
1: There might be a difference in strength in human opponents.
2: There might be a difference in strength in computer programs.
The games are ongoing and exciting to watch, and there is one additional
factor that makes it intriguing.
a - computer program shall get no help from human
b - human shall get no help from computer player
c - (and this is the interesting factor to me) - human will play
his theory of chess - in other words, not adjust his moves because he
is playing a computer.
This last is very interesting to me because I think humans often go wrong
when they play a computer in that they play an "anti-computer" strategy.
(I realize this is necessary in OTB chess, especially fast games - but in
correspondence play I think this is a mistake)
