I have a different opinion as to why his image is tarnished. Imagine if he
conducted himself as a perfect gentleman at all times. How would you
*personally* feel different about him?

I don't know about how much harder or easier it would be to get corporate
sponsors. The millions of dollars that IBM threw at it was some kind of freak
miracle. Nobody else had ever done anything remotely like that. The kinds of
things like before Deep Blue (Hitech, etc) are still being done (Zugzwang,
CilkChess, etc). The university based research is about the same as before (if
not more) and the previous corporate sponsorship -- what was it?

I suspect that if someone else came up with an idea better than Hsu &
Campbell's, they could find a sponsor.
