dear jeroen:
That sounds very lirical: the frontiers to be reached, the mountains to be
climbed "because they are there", etc. Well, is also somewhat lunatic. If only
we lived 1000 years or if only the day had 56 hours. What in fact happens is
that beyond certain decent limit, anything else you get does not help you to
improve nothing, but precisely the contrary. You lose your time learning how to
use he new program instead of using better the old one. Or even you does not
play anymore "because they are so strong anyway" and then you expend hours of
that limited resource that is time, the only thing Bill Gates or IM will not
give to you nor will update for you, looking how a program beats another program
and then running to this site to tell the news.
The theory of "let' s go forward to see what happens, without limits" is OK for
the humanity, not for individual human beings. We have not the time humanity
probably has. So our problem is how to get a good mix between our resources,
scarce time and a decently good tool to get the most. And clearly this mix is
awfully wronged if you lose the perspective and put too much weight in just the
tool. Of course I say all this not as a liberator, but as a sinner. It will be
not me who will stop buying, but at least I have a clear idea of how bousterous
it is, not to say insane.
from one mad to a companion of lunacy
