Chess programmers and CS students that take a parallel programming class is a very skewed sample. The fact is that multiple processor systems are very rare as home users' desktops. It's hard to expect that to change until Microsoft puts multi-processor support into their consumer version of Windows (I don't see Linux making any gigantic gains as a desktop OS in a near future).
