Yes, it's possible to derive the probable results from statistics alone, but I don't think it'll create more enthusiasm about the game itself. In ordinary tournament play it's a rare occasion if a 2500 rated player defeats a 2700+ player, since they don't play 100 games to test the probability distribution. So I fail to see your point. There's also the possibility of allowing a strong IM+ a computer program to participate in a strong tournament like Linares and see what happens.
