Ok, you won. But - as I said: when I want to start a DOS-program, I run windows again with f8 and decide to choose the dos-prompt. I get a NORMAL himem.sys, normal autoexec.bat with himem.sys on and no-ems. This gives enough memory for any chess program. If I want to get a /x program, I do it the same way, but this time bypass the 2 lines with the memory-devices. THIS IS ALL. No boot disk, no editing a config/autoexec-file, very easy. And if I would write a menue in the config.sys, it could be much easier... But - as I said: you won. I will no longer defend this DOS. DOS is also a Microsoft product. The problem with monopols (and Microsoft HAS a monopol) that they do not allow other companies to produce better products. No other company had the chance to make it better. They were beaten before their approaches were tried out. The problem with monopols is, that we have the same PROBLEM also in chess programming. Mr.Frederic Friedel said, that if we are lucky, we can get 20 nice engines for Fritz/ChessBase in the year 2000 ! In the moment we can get: Fritz3/4/5 Hiarcs6 Nimzo98 Junior maybe Gandalf. If this continues ( and I am sure "the gang" will try it) I see the same problematic situation we have in the microsoft-operating-system-discussion. I am not sure WHO of us is lucky about this. I don't believe that a monopol helps anybody ! A free market is not free if there are no competitors. Imagine all car-companies would have no own products but MERCEDES would be the big boss and GM, BMW, PORSCHE, Volkswagen, FIAT, ... would only deliver engines to MERCEDES. All cars you could drive would be MERCEDES-clones. I would die of boredom. NO Trabbi, no individuality. No. If the crew of the ENTERPRISE would exists of KIRK-clones, I would not like ONE serial. Kirk is so dominant, even in ONE person, how narcistic would Star Trek be with 10 Kirks standing on the bridge. No - we need Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura (of course!), Sulu, Chekov (don't forget the russian programs!!). I am not a doctor, but I know that monopoly causes cancer. I remember Thomas Nitsche's (and Elmar Henne's) Mephisto III. A different approach. 10 NPS, but able to win a championship. In the moment I am playing a mail chess game MARK V against Mephisto III S. Very interesting. Although Mephisto makes only a few NPS, it plays normal chess. This approach died. But why ??? Because it was not succesful. But was it really not succesful ? What could have been if Nitsche/Henne would have had the chance to try further instead of beeing replaced by Richard Lang ? What would have been with computerchess, if this approach would have been continued? This is what I would like to see. Many ideas. Many approaches. I have nothing against Kirk. But ONE kirk is enough. The Enterprise is a team. Of different people. Society should be a team. Otherwise it makes no progress. And computerchess needs a team or at least a competition. If there is no fair competition there is no progress at all. Therefore I don't like monopols. They stop evolution. They stop evolution. I don't want to bore you again with my "crazy" point of views. But I am definetely NOT looking into a future of 20 or 40 or more ChessBase engines. I think an american car is so interesting, BECAUSE it is different than a mercedes. Hm. If we are lucky, we will get 20 Fritz-engines. Horrible. A nightmare.
