Hi Michael:
Hi, First I have to admit that I can't answer your question (that is if the
virus software is running at the same time as a chess engine is there a degrade
in efficiency...though I never notice one).
I have had problems in the past with virus checkers and other utilities
causing more problems than they cure.
Here is one way of dealing with the (possible) problem: WHen I installed my
norton 2000, I UNCHECKED the box that states norton should startup when the
computer does. I don't really believe it is necessary to have a virus checker
running all the time. So what I do, is do a full system scan of my harddisc
every few days, and also, save all files to disc and scan them before opening
(it only takes a few seconds).
It is safer probably to run it all the time, but for me this is sufficient.
Also, I have used both Mcafee 4.0 and Norton 2000, and prefer nortons
products (they have a Norton 2001 either out or coming out soon. See:
www.symantec.com ) Matthew
