For this reason, crafty will always be my favorite program. There are many
others who enrich the field of chess programming and all of them are important.

Simple programs for others to learn from:

* Tom Kerrigan's TSCP -- the first program every beginner should look at.

* John Stanback's SCP -- the face that launched a thousand programs (I see it's
influence in almost all programs in one way or another)

* Christopher Bowron's BACE -- a very simple program that is nicely documented
and shows exactly how programs learn.

*  Adrien Regimbald's FAILE -- mother to Sjeng. ;-)

Intermediate programs that half the planet has scrutinized:
Both versions of GnuChess (Chua Kong-Sian & Stuart Cracraft/John Stanback)
If TSCP and SCP are not the most emulated programs on the planet, then these
programs might be another contender.

Programs showing advanced ideas:

* GCP's Sjeng -- many (including clever extensions)

* Dusan Dobe's Phalanx -- brialliant search and evaluation terms

* Robert Hyatt's Crafty -- The most advanced chess program on the planet for
which source code is available. The engine is definitely of commercial quality.

* Thorsten Greiner's Amy -- clearest version of NegaScout that I have ever seen

* Carlos del Cacho's Pepito -- Another NegaScout program with many advanced
techniques that will be a boon to Sanish speaking programmers.

Learning algorithms:
Sjeng
ExChess (Dan Homan)
Chessterfield (Matthias Lüscher)
BACE (mentioed above)
Crafty (book and position learning)

The list goes on and on. The number of programmers I have slighted with my
brief list is far greater than the number that I have praised, but I am far too
lazy to credit them all right now.
