Stopping messages from certain domain names. >b. Stopping messages from known bad user IP addresses. A and B are related. A is difficult as it will eliminate good and bad posters. I would certainly not object to the idea of blocking certain email sites that can be used to post things. But for a classic example, t-online.de used to have one specific poster that was probably the single most obnoxious poster in usenet news. Blocking that domain was very tempting but unfortunately, that would have blocked a bunch of very good posters as well. The main issue is anonymous vs known posters. I am 100% anti-anonymous as that is just a license to make trouble. But I am not particularly interested in blanket decisions that block good posters as well... >c. Stopping messages with certain keywords in the Subject. >d. Stopping messages from certain keywords in the Subject body. I think this is hopeless and totally worthless to think about. IE if you decide to eliminate the word "jerk" someone will come along with "J E R K" or J*E*R*K, etc. Catching all the possible permutations is a non-trivial task. And the more complex the parsing rule(s), the more mistakes we will see. IE "Jerk the plug before it burns up". >e. Consider the use of a software program to achieve any of the above. See above. >f. Unfortunately as you eliminate "noise" you will also stifle "content". I just use my own judgement, based on the subject line, to decide whether to click or not click on a particular post/thread. The only issue I ever raise is that the subject line should be reasonable to make my mental selection process as accurate as possible. > >To any that reply, thank you in advance. > >Sarah.
