hi dan, >Sorry to say, I have never heard that Q+N vs. Q+B should favour the Q+N in >general, since the bishop might restrict the knight, and I am good at endgames. there is indeed a critical review of this 'rule' in 'secrets of modern chess strategy' by john watson. he claims that this rule is in general not too useful, but i know many strong players who disagree with him. he did some statistics on this endgame type, and found that the side to play Q+N vs Q+B was generally the stronger side as far as elo go, on average the difference was 50-100 elo - i have forgotten the exact number. anyway, this indicates that the stronger players prefer playing with Q+N instead of with Q+B. don't misunderstand me: i don't want to claim that this rule is as general as 'put a rook behind your passer'. it isn't. but it's not useless either. cheers martin
