I disagree.  The first 30 years of computer chess was all "where money is not
the driving force".  Yet the framework for today's programs dates back to that
period of time.  I've never made a dime from computer chess, yet for a period
of 4-5 years we could hardly be beat.  Ken Thompson never made a dime either,
yet for a period of 4-5 years he could hardly be beat.  Same for Slate/Atkin.

I can only speak for myself, but I do this _all_ the time...

Otherwise there would be _no_ SMP crafty.  That was a pain to write and
debug, after I had already done it once years before in Cray Blitz.  It
was "more than about money"...
